Finding slope

1. Find the slope of the line through (1, 3) and (4, 9).

Show answer

m = (9 − 3) ÷ (4 − 1) = 6 ÷ 3 = 2

See it in Slope Finder →

2. Find the slope of the line through (−2, 5) and (2, −3).

Show answer

m = (−3 − 5) ÷ (2 − (−2)) = −8 ÷ 4 = −2

See it in Slope Finder →

3. Find the slope of the line through (−5, −1) and (3, 5).

Show answer

m = (5 − (−1)) ÷ (3 − (−5)) = 6 ÷ 8 = 3/4

See it in Slope Finder →

4. Find the slope of the line through (2, 7) and (2, −1). What is its equation?

Show answer

The run is 2 − 2 = 0, so the slope is undefined. The line is vertical, with equation x = 2.

5. Find the slope of the line through (−4, 6) and (5, 6). What is its equation?

Show answer

The rise is 6 − 6 = 0, so the slope is 0. The line is horizontal, with equation y = 6.

Writing equations

6. Write the equation of the line with slope 5 and y-intercept −2.

Show answer

Substitute m = 5 and b = −2 into y = mx + b: y = 5x − 2

7. Find the equation of the line through (3, 1) and (6, 3).

Show answer

m = (3 − 1) ÷ (6 − 3) = 2/3. Then 1 = ⅔ × 3 + b, so 1 = 2 + b, and b = −1.

y = ⅔x − 1. Check: ⅔ × 6 − 1 = 3. ✓

8. Find the equation of the line through (−1, 4) and (2, −5).

Show answer

m = (−5 − 4) ÷ (2 − (−1)) = −9 ÷ 3 = −3. Then 4 = −3 × (−1) + b, so 4 = 3 + b, and b = 1.

y = −3x + 1. Check: −3 × 2 + 1 = −5. ✓

9. Write the point-slope form of the line with slope ½ through (−2, 3).

Show answer

y − 3 = ½(x + 2). The point has x = −2, so x − (−2) becomes x + 2.

Changing form

10. Find the slope and y-intercept of 4x − 2y = 10.

Show answer

Rearrange: −2y = −4x + 10, then divide by −2: y = 2x − 5.

Slope 2, y-intercept −5.

11. Write y = −⅗x + 2 in standard form.

Show answer

Multiply by 5: 5y = −3x + 10. Move the x term: 3x + 5y = 10.

Parallel, perpendicular and tables

12. Find the line parallel to y = −4x + 7 through (2, 1).

Show answer

Same slope, −4. Then 1 = −4 × 2 + b, so 1 = −8 + b, and b = 9.

y = −4x + 9

13. Find the line perpendicular to y = 3x − 1 through (6, 2).

Show answer

The negative reciprocal of 3 is −1/3. Then 2 = −⅓ × 6 + b, so 2 = −2 + b, and b = 4.

y = −⅓x + 4

14. The table shows points on a line: when x = 1, 3, 5, y = −1, 5, 11. Find the equation.

Show answer

Each time x goes up by 2, y goes up by 6, so m = 6 ÷ 2 = 3. Then −1 = 3 × 1 + b, so b = −4.

y = 3x − 4. Check: 3 × 5 − 4 = 11. ✓

Systems of equations

15. Solve y = 3x − 2 and y = −x + 6.

Show answer

Set them equal: 3x − 2 = −x + 6, so 4x = 8 and x = 2. Then y = 3 × 2 − 2 = 4.

(2, 4). Check: −2 + 6 = 4 ✓.

See it in the Intersection Finder →

16. Solve x + y = 8 and x − y = 2.

Show answer

Add the equations: 2x = 10, so x = 5. Then 5 + y = 8, so y = 3.

(5, 3). Check: 5 − 3 = 2 ✓.

See it in the Intersection Finder →

17. Solve 2x + 3y = 7 and 4x + 6y = 10.

Show answer

Multiply the first equation by 2: 4x + 6y = 14. Subtract the second: 0 = 4, which is false.

No solution. The lines are parallel, both with slope −2/3.

See it in the Intersection Finder →

18. Solve 3x + 2y = 12 and x − 2y = −4.

Show answer

The y terms are +2y and −2y, so add: 4x = 8 and x = 2. Then 3 × 2 + 2y = 12, so 2y = 6 and y = 3.

(2, 3). Check: 2 − 2 × 3 = −4 ✓.

Quadratics by intersecting lines

19. Solve x² − 2x − 8 = 0 by the intersecting lines method.

Show answer

Rearrange to x² = 2x + 8 and draw the line y = 2x + 8. It crosses y = x² at (−2, 4) and (4, 16).

x = −2 or x = 4. Check: 4 + 4 − 8 = 0 ✓ and 16 − 8 − 8 = 0 ✓.

20. Which line would you draw to solve x² + 3x − 4 = 0? What are the solutions?

Show answer

Rearrange to x² = −3x + 4, so draw y = −3x + 4. It crosses the parabola at (−4, 16) and (1, 1).

x = −4 or x = 1. Check: 16 − 12 − 4 = 0 ✓ and 1 + 3 − 4 = 0 ✓.

See it in the Quadratic Solver →

21. Solve 2x² − 6x + 4 = 0 by the intersecting lines method.

Show answer

Divide by 2 first: x² − 3x + 2 = 0. Rearrange: x² = 3x − 2, so draw y = 3x − 2. It crosses the parabola at (1, 1) and (2, 4).

x = 1 or x = 2. Check: 2 − 6 + 4 = 0 ✓ and 8 − 12 + 4 = 0 ✓.

22. How many solutions does x² − 6x + 9 = 0 have? Use the intersecting lines method to explain.

Show answer

Rearrange to x² = 6x − 9. The line y = 6x − 9 just touches the parabola at (3, 9): it is a tangent.

One repeated solution, x = 3. The discriminant agrees: 36 − 36 = 0.
